Hebrews 8:1-13 (DB of 18/5/2017)

key verse: 13

THE NEW COVENANT IN JESUS

The author compares the old covenant to the new one. The new covenant is superior and much better than the old one which is disappearing.

1. Jesus in the new sanctuary (1-7)

If Jesus was an ordinary high priest, we wouldn't need him, since there are many others who could do the work. However, he is a superior high priest because he has gone up to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. His ministry is in the heavenly sanctuary made by his hand. Down here, high priests offer gifts to God as a shadow of the heavenly reality, just as Moses erected the tent according to the model received on Sinai. Therefore, Jesus' covenant is better, just as the promise is better. The first covenant was imperfect, which is why we need a better one. This was accomplished through Christ's coming. Jesus is the author of faith and brings it to perfection for each man.

2. They shall all know me (8-13)

God reproaches men who are strongly attached to the old law. At present, the Hebrews must abandon their legalism and accept Jesus as their Savior who will purify them entirely by grace. In the past, their fathers did not persevere in the covenant, losing its validity, and consequently, God no longer showed concern for them. Now, however, God sends his Son to accomplish his will. While persevering in obediance and with the help of the Holy Spirit, they will be able to understand the word of God. Both children and adults will be pardonned for their iniquities. It is not that man deserves this; it's the grace of God (12). Thus, the old covenant gives way to the new one.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the new covenant in Jesus which is superior and better for me. Help me to possess it completely.

Bottom line: Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant
