YES, THE HIGH PRIEST JESUS
We need a high priest, because we are sinners and we need forgiveness. Who is the best high priest ?
1. Melchisedek's vocation (7-16)
Levi received the tithe from his brothers because of Moses' law. But the tithe was given first to Melkisedek by Abraham, then by Jacob and certainly by Isaac. Levi wasn't born when that was applied. Melkisedek's order already existed. Melkisedek's vocation is fundamentally different from Levi's vocation because the second is not perfect, whereas Melkisedek's order succeded and the Lord belongs to this order (Ps 110:4). What distnguishes the Lord is that he doesn't belong to Levi's line, but he belongs to Judah's line, so that means a new order established.
2. Christ's eternal vocation (17-28)
Jesus is the high priest of a new order, because the previous leviticus order based on Moses' law doesn't lead to perfection whereas Jesus' order leads to it. Jesus gives us the best hope which is living (19). Because he is the eternal high priest he provides the best alliance. It's also because of the divine oath. His vocation isn't transmissible. He intercedes in favor of those which approach him (24,25). This high priest suits very well mankind, because we don't need to see the human high priest who constantly makes offerings purifing himself from his sins. God's Son had accomplished it once and for all, basing itnot on the law but on the later word. Thanks to his vocation we are now forgiven and we can enter God's kingdom.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for sending Jesus as my high priest according to Melchisedek, so that by him I am eternally forgiven and I am the high priest for his people.
Bottom line: the superiority of Jesus' vocation
